For my Design For America RSO (DFA) 2022-2023 at the UW, my team and I proposed POMEGRANATE, an innovative mobile application to empower low-income mothers throughout their pregnancy journey. We spent a total of 8 months, researching, ideating, and designing the ideal solution to the many hardships that our targeted audience experience throughout their pregnancy.

Introduction
Project Overview
Low-income mothers often face challenges throughout their pregnancy journey due to limited access to healthcare, financial stress, and a lack of support systems. Along with such challenges, they also experience emotional and physical demands of pregnancy with very few resources tailored to their needs.

Thus, we developed Pomegranate, a mobile app that provides medical information, resources, and community connections that mothers would need to thrive during pregnancy. As a team of 7 designers, we spent a total of 8 months to design a solution and to create a well-defined prototype that would grant mothers access to all necessary resources in one platform with the moral support that they would need throughout their pregnancy journey.
2011-2014
Goal
The main goal of Pomegranate is to create a platform that provides medical and clinical resources for pregnant individuals, along with features that connect individuals to a supportive network to improve their mental health in order to meet their social and personal needs.
2007-2010
Problem Statement
How might we centralize prenatal & support systems for low-income mothers to foster connections and cultivate mental wellness throughout their pregnancy?
Project Summary
Low-income pregnant individuals have significant barriers to accessing treatment, information, and resources during their pregnancy. With the foundational physical and mental distress, such barriers contribute to the frustration that they experience throughout their pregnancy.

Qualitative Coding & Affinity Diagrams

Research
Key Research Findings
01
Peer Support
→ Not enough peer support; most only have their partner to depend on
→ Support programs are beneficial, but not flexible in terms of time making it difficult for working individuals to attend
02
Accessing Pregnancy-Related Information
→ Lots of resources can be found online, but lack of personalization and reliability
→ Too much information/resources could often be overwhelming
03
Financial Difficulties
→ Lack of financial support in healthcare/medical care services
→ Government aids are often very selective
04
Mental Health
→ One of the key challenges to overcome throughout pregnancy is declining mental health
→ Many are unsure of how to deal with such approaching challenges.

→ Design sped up very quickly
→ Would dedicate more time to test with our target users to get feedback
03
Learning to design with vulnerable populations
→ We learned how to be very intentional and careful throughout the process
